Choosing a Spanish Credit Card
Compared to the great variety of competing credit card offers in other countries, you may find relatively little to choose from when looking at Spanish credit cards. However, differences do exist and it is worth knowing how to to spot them.
Obviously, you first need to identify the APR of the cards on offer, which in Spain is generally quite high. The figure you should look for is the TAE. Expect to pay upwards of 18%. This will also be an important factor for any balance transfers you want to make, but check the commision charges that will be incurred by moving your debt to a new card. Our glossary will help you recognise some of the terms you will come across
Another important factor in your decision will be the existance of annual fees (cuota annual). These are virtually a thing of the past in the Uk so often catch ex-pats by surprise. Most, but not all, providers will include these charges, which can often be quite steep. However, some banks have at least started to offer the first year free of charge.
One of the other key factors that differentiate between Spanish credit cards are the included extras: such as travel insurance and purchase protection. Given that credit in Spain can be an expensive way of borrowing, you should make sure that your card comes with as many complimentary services as possible.
Likewise, in this day and age, any credit card you choose should come with 24 online access for checking payments and managing your balance. Round the clock customer service should also be available, and if you donīt speak Spanish, ensure that English speaking representatives are provided for cases of emergency such as lost or stolen cards or unauthorised payments
